How to choose actuated valves in water treatment explosion-proof environments?

Usually, engineers will choose electric valves with explosion-proof function, but can only electric valves be selected for water treatment explosion-proof working conditions? Next we will describe how to choose suitable actuated valves.

First, we need to understand the conditions for explosion. 


3 factors must be met for an explosion to occur: First, there is a flammable substance. Second, the concentration reaches the explosion limit. Third, it must reach the ignition point. When the above conditions are met, an explosion may occur.

Second, let’s understand the water treatment process. 


General process of sewage treatment: after the wastewater passes through the grid, screen backflow, flocculation sedimentation tank, pre-aeration adjustment tank, primary floating filler biochemical tank, secondary floating filler biochemical tank, inclined plate sedimentation tank, and coagulation sedimentation tank, Finally, the water discharged from the inclined plate sedimentation tank flows into the clear water tank, and is discharged after testing.

Flammable and explosive gases may be produced or found in different clean tanks, concentration tanks, subterranean sewage, sludge gate wells, stagnant sewage tanks, and disinfection facilities in the input channels (pipes) of sewage treatment plants. 

Various sources, including sewage tanks, pumping stations, aeration tanks, sludge digesters, deodorization facilities, and treatment plants, produce these gases. The manufacture of biogas often involves high-risk processes like sludge digestion and aeration. Methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide are among the dangerous elements included in the biogas made from sludge.

Third, how to choose suitable actuated valves? 


1. Double-acting normally closed pneumatic valve

As mentioned above, many flammable and explosive gases will be produced during the sewage treatment process. Explosion requires three necessary conditions. In order to cut off the formation of these conditions, Fleyenda recommends that you choose a double-acting normally closed pneumatic valve.

-The double-acting pneumatic actuator has a fast opening and closing function, and the switching can reach 0.5~1 seconds. If a leak occurs on site, engineers can quickly cut off the medium through the power signal.

-Pneumatic valves are available in normally open and normally closed types. In working conditions that require an emergency stop, the use of normally closed pneumatic valves can prevent hydrogen, biogas, sulfur and other substances from harming workers' bodies and cut off the medium in the pipeline, making it easier for engineers to repair and inspect the pipeline.

-It can also be equipped with explosion-proof electromagnetic reversing valve, explosion-proof limit switch, explosion-proof positioner, handwheel and other accessories.

In addition to being applicable to drainage, sewage, water treatment and environmental protection industries, it can also be applied to food, heating, gas, shipbuilding, hydropower, metallurgy, energy systems, and textile industries.


2. Explosion-proof electric valve

Explosion-proof actuators allow explosions to occur inside the equipment. The explosion-proof surface of the shell is designed to prevent internal sparks or explosion carriers from contacting the outside world. A suitable explosion-proof surface gap and a sufficient length of the explosion-proof surface can ensure at this point. At the same time, the sturdy shell can withstand the high pressure generated by the internal explosion without being destroyed.
